GUILD OF MOTORING WRITERS

Editor-in-Chief at the GOMW's inaugural ‘Bring Your Own Car Day’ 4  September 2010

Sarah Bradley brought her classic motor cycle

Retro-Speed would like to thank the Guild and in particular Peter Burgess, Chris Mann and Sha Carter-Allison for organising this wonderful ‘day out’, roaming the Chiltern countryside.

After croissants and coffee at The Firs, the ex-secret weapons establishment, now better known as Winston Churchill’s Toy Shop, near Aylesbury, we took our place in the line of ‘classics’ and without more ado, set off in our 1954 Lancia Appia to complete the fifty-mile, pre lunch, voyage of discovery determined to solve at least a few of the mind-numbing questions along the way.

We were the last car to arrive at the Bell in Waddesdon, which probably says something about our navigational skills, but never mind, there followed a most convivial two-hour break. The fish cakes, apple crumble and probable/slightly improbable personal antidotes were top notch.

The afternoon run gave us the opportunity to drive Kop Hill near Princes Risborough (still an unspoiled climb with 100 years to its credit), wave at whoever was spending the weekend at Chequers and visit Aston Clinton where a plaque to Lionel Martin of Aston Martin fame has now been erected. Tea was taken in the shade of Wendover Woods.

The final few miles of Buckinghamshire country lanes led us to Central Farm, home of Chris Mann, where a most splendid evening of entertainment had been arranged including a pig roast and live music. Much merriment ensued and it was thus with great obvious reluctance that we finally dragged ourselves away. That we got immediately lost seemed a fitting end to a memorable day.
