HSCC PLANS FOR 2011
3 August 2010
The Historic Sports Car Club is targeting the 1600cc Formula 3 cars of the early 1970s for a revival in 2011 and anyone with a car from the era is beng invited to Brands Hatch on 11 September, where the Club will be running a full programme of racing.
The Club's aim is to have between 10 and 20 1600cc F3 cars racing regularly in 2011 and beyond, running alongside the 2-litre cars in the Classic Formula 3 Championship. The 1600cc cars were part of the Classic F3 race at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix in May 2010 and the Club believes that many more cars could be out racing regularly.
The HSCC is keen to hear from owners of 1600cc F3 cars. Complimentary tickets will be available for those taking their car and invitations can be gained by calling the Club office on 01327 858400 or sending an e-mail to office@hscc.org.uk

RALLY CAR CHRISTMAS CARDS
28 July 2010
The Motorsport Safety Fund has launched details of this year’s Christmas card. Based on an oil painting by Dion Pears it depicts Hannu Mikkola and Gunnar Palm on their way to victory in the 1970 Mexico World Cup Rally, the cost is just £6.50 for a pack of ten including envelopes, postage and packing. This is a very worthy cause so I will resist the obvious comment: ‘not another Escort’.
The cards are available from: Motorsport Safety Fund, Penny Farthing, Heythrop, Chipping Norton, OX7 5TW.

GOODBYE FROM LE MANS
12 July 2010
Well, it's over for another two years and thousands of fans are now homeward-bound, heading for the channel ports, most of them behind the wheel of their favourtie classic and driving in convoy with friends.
It's been a hot twenty-four hours with temperatures in the high thirties but now, on Sunday evening, as they follow the Route National towards St. Malo, Caen or Calais, shadows lengthen, a soft breeze blows and all is right with the world.
Back in the air-conditioned Press Office, high above the Start line the two Retro-Speed reporters switch off their laptops, hand back their passes and head into town for a well-earned dinner. The restaurant is over-loaded with those staying another night, some are eating, the majority are happy just soaking up the atmosphere, talkng cars and enjoying another beer. It's noisy.
But whether driving, reporting or just reluctant to leave Le Mans, everyone agrees - it's been one hell of a weekend.
LE MANS CLASSIC QUALIFYING
10 July 2010
Conditions at the Sarthe circuit for qualifying were scorching, reaching a high of 39 degrees centigrade mid-afternoon. It is expected to remain similar during the twenty-four hours with an outside chance of showers during the night.
Fastest car during qualifying was the Porsche 936 driven by Luco/Nicolet, recording a storming average lap of 193.95kph (118mph approx). This fell to 182.84kph for the night session.
By contrast, fastest of the oldest cars, 1923-1939, was the Talbot 105 driven by Burnett/Bronson and Maxted Page which averaged a game 135.82kph, five seconds faster than second placed car, another Talbot 105 entered by the same team of drivers.
As a pre-curser to a weekend of action beginning at 16.00hrs today (French time), the night qualifying was pure nostalgia with cars such as Porsche 910, Ferrari P3, Lola T70 and Chevron B8 howling through the grandstand area, lights ablaze and touching 190mph before slowing for the entry into Courbe Dunlop.

ARRIVE AND DRIVE WITH TUTHILL
22 June 2010

Tuthill Porsche support team on Mid Wales Stages
Nobody does it better than Francis Tuthill Ltd. and, in an effort to break the Escort stranglehold on British historic rallying, over the next six months is building ten identical rally Porsche 911s on an ‘arrive and drive’ basis for next year’s Dunlop/WONAGO.com MSA British Historic Rally Championship (BHRC), where they will run their own championship within a championship.
Still in its early days but the plan is that for an all-in-charge of £42,250 (plus VAT) they will enter you into five rounds of the BHRC, four gravel and one tarmac. Best performing Tuthill driver could win a fully-paid entry into a FIA European Rally with second prize, a trip to the Safari Rally as guests of the team. Third place earns a Norway ice driving experience.
Richard Tuthill is very enthusiastic over the project: “There will be an official launch and I am open to ideas as to how to fine tune things. One thing is for sure, it’s going to happen.”

Mark and Sue Godfrey can now add victory in the 22nd Classic Marathon to their string of wins that includes the recent Three Castles Trial in Wales. They arrived in Biarritz 19s ahead of Howard and Matt Warren, whilst the Porsche 914/6 driven by Andrew and Sarah Mallagh was just 2s adrift in third place. Jayne Wignall/Kevin Savage finished fourth, Frank Fennell/John Bayliss fifth and Paul Merryweather/Brian Johnson sixth. Team Retro-Speed Crew Miles Chamberlain/Andrew Allen brought their Cortina 1600E home in a comfortable 29th place.
There were eleven retirements which goes to show the 22nd Classic Marathon was no easy event.

CLASSIC MARATHON DAILY UPDATE
18 June 2010
17 June, Leg 5 St. Lary Soulan - Biarritz. Another day of tough regularities and the Godfreys are still out in front but their lead is just 10s over the Warrens in their Porsche 911 who hold a very slim one second advantage over Andrew and Sarah Mallagh in their fast Porsche 914/6. Three more crews including Marathon veteran Paul Merryweather/Brian Johnson stand a chance of finishing in the top three as the rally heads for today’s finish. Beware, there is always a sting in the tale.
Sad news is Alastair Caldwell has finally succumbed to the pressure and retired, bringing the total number fallen by the wayside up to seven. Team Retro-Speed crew of Miles Chamberlain/Andrew Allen made up a place yesterday and are now in thirtieth place. Keep going lads.
CLASSIC MARATHON DAILY UPDATE
17 June 2010
16 June, Leg 4 Carcassonne – St. Lary Soulan. It’s all to play for. After a day of tough regularities and some last minute route changes Mark and Sue Godfrey in their MGB are back on top with a lead of 18s. Paul Wignall/Iain Tullie are still pushing the little Alfa hard while in third place comes the menacing and fast Porsche of Howard and Matt Warren. Jayne Wignall/Kevin Savage could break through, now in fifth place only 1m 30s off the lead. Team Retro-Speed is still in thirty-first place and Alastair Caldwell has accumulated over five hours of penalties. Down but not out.
CLASSIC MARATHON DAILY UPDATE
16 June 2010
15 June, Leg 3 Millau - Carcassonne. Paul Wignall/Iain Tullie push the Godfreys into second place, possibly owing to a small error on the Chateau de Lastours test, and hold a slim 7s lead at the end of Leg 3. Paul Merryweather/Brian Johnson suffered problems with their Merecedes Benz 250SL but still finished the day in fourth place. Jayne Wignall/Kevin Savage have now moved up to seventh place with Frank Fennell/John Bayliss just 28s behind. The Team Retro-Speed crew of Miles Chamberlain/Andrew Allen in their Cortina 1600E are maintaining a steady midway pace.

Mark Godfrey, running repairs
Leg 2 Beaune - Millau. After a morning section that included roads made famous by the Monte Carlo Rally, the first test at Col de la Croix de Bauzon showed Mark Godfrey fastest. 52ND RALLYE DES ALPES
11 June 2010
Hard on the heels of the Classic Marathon comes the exciting 52nd edition of the Rallye des Alpes, 20-26 June 2010, organised by John Davenport and Robert Rorife and this year making full use of the wonderful Bernese Oberland. Sadly numbers are down, probably the result of an overcrowded calendar. There really are too many rallies, plus the current financial unrest, but it’s good to see my friend Peter Barker out in his trusty well-known Mini Cooper with the indefatigable Willie Cave on the maps. In all twelve UK crews make up the total entry of twenty-seven so another British win could be on the cards.
1973 LOTUS ELAN
8 June 2010
Editor-in-Chief recognises number plate

Malcolm Rickets and ELA 111 - Nant Melai regularity, Three Castles 2010
Having taken pictures of this Elan on the Three Castles Welsh Classic Trial I just knew I had seen the car before. Sure enough, issue one of Classic and Sportscar, April 1982, featured this fine Lotus in its Sports Car Profile series. Even more, it is still owned by Malcolm Ricketts who purchased the car in kit form, new, in 1973. That is thirty-seven years ago. Not bad. Re the number plate, he paid £500 for it out of the Sunday Times, quite a lot then but very cheap by today’s standards.
Malcolm was quoted at the time as saying, “Even if the house fell down or the taxman left me without a penny, I would still keep the Elan.”
Don’t know about the house or the taxman but he’s still got the car.

22ND CLASSIC MARATHON 12-18 JUNE

2009 Marathon winners Frank Fennell/Mark Appleton
Starting just seven days later the Classic Marathon, running from Burgundy to the Pyrenees, also has a strong entry with recent Tulip Rally winner Paul Wignall starting again as favourite, this time with Iain Tullie in the hot seat of the venerable Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint. Opposition comes from Mark and Sue Godfrey in their MGB, John Bateson/Tina Lowe in the Merc and, of course, Jayne Wignall in her Sunbeam Tiger with Kevin Savage again on the maps. More Retro-Speed friends competing include Tony Barron, Herman Maas and Val and Graham Gilmore. Outsiders for victory, hmm.... We go for Richard Prosser and the ever reliable Andy Gibson, they could just pull it off.

BROOKLANDS DOUBLE TWELVE UPDATE
21 May 2010
Latest entries for the Double Twelve Motoring Festival on 5 and 6 June
The ex-Peter Sellers Radford Mini Cooper, a rare concours-winning 1927 Duesenberg Model X Speedster and a 1926 Le Mans Team Bentley are amongst recently confirmed entries for the Brooklands Double Twelve Motoring Festival 2010, which is being promoted by Brooklands Museum in association with the Vintage Sports-Car Club (VSCC).
The Mini Cooper, the Duesenberg (which recently achieved a class win at the prestigious Villa d’Este concours in Italy) and the Bentley (the 1926 ‘Scrap’ Thistlethwayte Team 3-litre) are all entered in the unique two-day “Double Twelve” competition, combining driving tests and concours judging in the manner of the great pre-war rallies. They will be joined by a brace of Alfa Romeo 6c1750s, one of the sixteen original Jaguar XKSSs and a D-Type, all of which entries have been confirmed in the last few days. Intriguing battles in the competition are shaping up between groups of Sunbeam Tigers and AC Cobras, recalling the rivalries of these great Anglo-American hybrids of the 1960s, and between three-wheeled Morgans and their later four-wheeled sisters.
Recently confirmed entries in the Brooklands Speed Trials – a pre-war sprint running on the Saturday of the Festival on the Mercedes-Benz World circuit at Brooklands – include two Riley MPH cars (one of which is the prototype), the ex-Bill Morris ERA (R12C) and Martin Overington’s Grand Prix Type 35B Bugatti. Bentleys are the most popular marque entered with five superb examples lined up so far including Stanley Mann’s 1929 Le Mans 4½ litre. Edwardian racers will be a real highlight, the 1907 Corbin Vanderbuilt Cup car and the 1907 Wolseley Wolsit Coppa Florio going head to head is not to be missed.
Brooklands Museum’s Director Allan Winn, promoter of the Double Twelve Motoring Festival, says: “We are really excited about the quality of the entries we are receiving for both competitions. This is shaping up to be a classic weekend of motor sport in the finest traditions of Brooklands – whether it’s Speed or Style (or both) that excites you, Brooklands is going to be the place to be on the 5th and 6th.”
Entries for both competitions finally close on 24th May. For details of how to enter contact nic.waller1@virgin.net or neilsinclair@brooklandsmuseum.com or visit the VSCC website www.vscc.co.uk

WINNING FLUSH FOR RM AUCTION
8 May 2010
A big win at the casino would have been nothing compared to the success of the RM auction, held on 1 May, at Monaco during the GP Historique weekend.
First there was the Monaco Grand Prix, then there was the Monaco Historic Grand Prix and this year there was the Grand Prix des Auctions. As it has done in so many places around the world, Canadian auction house RM decided to raise the stakes in Monaco by running a third sale alongside Bonhams and Coys.
It would be an understatement to say that it was a success, so astounding were the results. A grand total of Euro33.2 million changed hands and 88 out of the total 105 cars found buyers, albeit some of them after the sale. This included their biggest star, a BMW 328 Mille Miglia that sold for a sum that will remain undisclosed.
Otherwise, the feature 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet took Euro2.8million, the Chris Evans Ferrari California Spider went to Euro2.07million and a long-wheelbase 250GT Tour de France made Euro2.35million.
But it wasn’t all Ferraris. A fabulous little 1953 Moretti 750 Gran Sport made Euro151.2K, “My car of the sale,” said collector Lorenzo Prandina. The first Lola T70 took Euro403.2K and a Lancia Aurelia B53 by Allemano went for Euro100.8K.

JOLLY TIMES AT BONHAMS
8 May 2010
When it was clear there were going to be three separate historic car auctions during the Monaco Historique weekend, 30 April to 2 May, not surprisingly there were doubters. Bonhams certainly doesn’t exude the razzmatazz of their rivals RM, and their traditional customers would possibly say hurrah to that, but there is always something in the air at Monaco that makes people put their hands in their pockets for those ‘a little different’ cars and it’s probably the smell of the briny that makes the ‘Jolly’ Fiats so popular. A replica sold over the odds for Euro14.9K against top estimate of 12 and in the same category an Eden Roc Autobianchi Cabriolet took Euro12.6K, virtually top money.
But more than novelty, Monaco has finally underlined the inexorable rise of the Lancia Aurelia. All those of you who thought you would wait and buy one later have missed the boat, they are heading rapidly far out of reach. A gorgeous Series 4, restored and with full Nardi conversion from period, went for Euro103.5 K while even a lovely B21 saloon, previously relatively unloved, took Euro31.6K. There is still a market for reasonably priced entry-level historic competition fodder too, with a very attainable Euro13.2K forked out for a 1972 Lancia Fulvia rally car.
Star was a beautifully restored and very rare Abarth 750 Spider at Euro69K, while a Cameron Millar Maserati 250F and an ex-Rowan Atkinson Lancia Flaminia Zagato both sold.

SURPRISES AT BONHAMS
23 April 2010
Bonhams reported 93% sales on 18 April with several surprises. The Fiat 500 top estimate was £6K but bidding soared to £9K - for a standard but restored car. A Morgan F Type 3-wheeler doubled estimate. Fiat X1/9 was good value to someone for £3,220. Feature AC428 at £63K was mid-estimate. All prices include buyers premium.

HISTORIC F2 AT HOCKENHEIM
11 April 2010
British racers Martin Stretton and Matthew Watts top the entry for the opening two rounds of the 2010 Historic Formula 2 Championship at Hockenheim during the weekend of 17/18 April.
Defending champion Stretton has stepped up to a 2-litre March 742, having won the 2009 title in his 1600cc March 712, while Watts continues with his ex-Norman Dickson March 772.
The F2 Trophy will be contested over a schedule of twelve races at six major historic race meetings. All six tracks on the calendar have a period Formula 2 history, including Brands Hatch GP, which hosts the British rounds on 3/4 July. The F2 championship caters for both 1600cc and 2-litre Formula 2, also Formula Atlantic cars produced from 1967 to 1978.
The 22-car field includes drivers from seven countries and six manufacturers, with nine 2-litre cars and thirteen 1600cc cars. New to F2 will be Historic F1 racers Richard Meins (March 762) and Peter Wuensch in the ex-Eddie Cheever Ralt RT1. Peter Meyrick (March 782) is another leading contender, while Japanese racer Katsu Kubota (March 712) tops the 1600cc field.
"This is a great start to the F2 season," said Grahame White of the HSCC, managers of the championship. "It is very encouraging to have a 22-car entry for Hockenheim with a number of new drivers and new driver and car combinations."

Important news. Malcolm Wilson of M-Sport and Iain Wight of Ricardo have joined the Motorsport Industry Association. The organisation not only caters for those directly involved but also helps universities and colleges.
The first race of the inaugural Masters pre-1966 Mini Series takes place at Snetterton on 18 April and the great news is Hillman Imps are eligible. Those of us around at the time will remember just how entertaining this combination was.
Organisers of the Carrera Copacabana visiting Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil, starting 21 October, remind us the cut off date for entries is 29 May. Contact info@thetrial.nl or visit www.classicevents.nl

Mark Hales, respected journalist and very capable racing driver, will be teaching others how to win as from 13 April at Cadwell Park and 21 May at Snetterton. Contact mark@markhales.com
Another first for the Masters Series this year will be the amalgamation of the Interserie Revival with the Proto 70s. This means the powerful Can-Am cars will be mixing it with the much smaller and more nimble 2/3 litre sports cars.
For those who prefer a day socialising with maybe the odd glass of wine, the Bromley Pageant of Motoring, which claims to be ‘the biggest one day classic car show’ in the world, will take place on Sunday, 13 June in South London. Aston Martin will be celebrating seventy-five years but, of course, the big one will be Alfa Romeo popping the corks on their centenary.
Other social get-togethers include:- The Bristol Italian Car Festival 24 April; The FBHVC Drive It Day 25 April; and Auto-Italia at Brooklands 1 May.
Lancia Motor Club will be holding their annual track day at Goodwood on 22 May. All are welcome, an instructor will be on hand and the circuit is open all day. Contact blsmills68@yahoo.co.uk
Club LanciaSport Summer Rally will be over the weekend 17/18 July and include a ‘drive and learn’ day at Curborough, followed by Cholmondeley Pageant of Power on the Sunday. There will be an overnight stop-over and a tulip roadbook. More information at www.lanciasport.com
The Regis Classic Tour, now a round of the HRCR Scenic Tours and ably run by Ali Green and friends, will take place 19/21 March. It is a most enjoyable weekend combining good food and wine with sufficient driving through the lanes to keep everyone happy. Expect the Saturday ‘Masked Ball’ to be special. Over the years the girls have raised over £254,000 for cancer charities. Good on them. Contact Ali Green via www.theregisclassictour.co.uk
AINTREE
14 March 2010
It's fifty-five years since Stirling Moss achieved his first-ever Grand Prix victory at Aintree, in 1955, hence the title. In celebration the Aintree Circuit Club will be holding a Classic and Speed Trial with classes to include historic, vintage, classic and contemporary racing, sports and saloon cars. Sadly, the original three-mile Grand Prix circuit has been compressed into no more than a quick run up the old main straight.

Patrick Head voted Top of the Class at Grand Prix Masters
28 February 2010
Patrick Head will be the new name in post-1978 Formula One cars for the series run by Masters Historic Racing. This is the first time a class within the Championship has not been named after a famous driver.
Patrick joined Frank Williams in 1976 and together enjoyed three decades of success, starting with the FW06 which appears regularly on GPM events.

Christopher Tate
“There is no-one better than Patrick Head to typify the innovation and fresh thinking during this dramatic era,” said Christopher Tate, Race Director. “We are thrilled he has kindly agreed to his name being used for this class, his achievements at the top of the sport are remarkable and we hope he will find time to come along and visit during the season.”

Autoclassique.TV launching at Race Retro
28 February 2010
Sounds like another good reason for not helpting around the house. Launching on 12 March, Autoclassique TV is a new pay-per-view channel specialising in all areas of motor sport.
The rally section harks back to the glory days of rallying and includes the Alpine, Monte and Safari of the pre-WRC era as well as exciting stuff from 1980s Group B.
Something close to the hearts of our readers will be the section given over to classic rallying. While away the hours re-living those events such as the Classic Marathon and 1997 Peking-Paris.
Films will cost as little as 5 pence a minute with the option of taking out a monthly subscription. Visitors to Race Retro will have the opportunity to talk to Paul Hargreaves, the Site Moderator and learn more.
N.E.W.S. Run - Sunday, 25 April supporting the National Drive It Day
23 February 2010
We are especially pleased that the effervescent Jonothan Bowles, proprietor of Continental Car Tours, has been encouraged for the second time to organise his immensely enjoyable N.E.W.S. Run. Here is an early opportunity for owners of interesting cars to come out and enjoy the British springtime. And to save fuel they can start from any one of the four points of the compass (hence the name), heading for Gaydon in the fair county of Warwickshire.
As with everything that Mr. Bowles organises, there is a twist and here it is: Entrants, having decided from which direction to approach the finish will then be expected to choose a route they consider the shortest. In the meantime, a series of way points are compulsory where it is necessary to take photographs as proof of adherence. Who said it would be easy? After arriving at Gaydon drivers have the opportunity of taking part in an ‘autokhana’ driving test, although this is not compulsory.
At a modest £25 this is surely great value, it’s social and a real family fun day out.

Stanley Mann in Court Case over Bentley Speed Six
19 February 2010

Mercedes Travis Brewer
Poor old Stanley Mann, perhaps the most respected purveyor of Bentleys, is being taken to court because Mrs. Mercedes (really) Travis Brewer feels her £430,000, restored Le Mans-style Speed Six is, how should we put this, not a real Speed Six and it was Mr. Mann who not only carried out the work, but during his ownership ‘improved’, for his own pleasure, its appealability.
The tangled tale begins when Mrs. Travis Brewer purchases said car in 2007 after the Bentley Drivers Club Ltd, in ignorance, suggests it could be worth considerably more, maybe as much as £550,000. Just one year later madam, probably for the best of reasons, decides vintage motoring is not her cup of tea, i.e. decides to cash in on her good fortune so contacts Bonhams. They, however, knowing their job, recognise the changes and slap a new valuation on the car of just £300,000ish which naturally displeases Mrs. Mercedes Travis Brewer and she can’t wait to get her favourite American lawyer on the case.

Ed-in-Chief with Bentleys at Arnage
In the meantime Stanley Mann is bewildered by all this publicity, “I built that car in the seventies for my own use. I love that car. I have even offered to buy it back but she wants more, plus interest.”
The case opens next week and we predict Stanley will become the most famous man in the history of Bentley since Woolf Barnato.
We will keep you posted.

Greg will be in the UK during Race Retro to answer questions but in the meantime he is available via greg@huzler.com Alternatively telephone Martin Sharp 0208 675 5818.

27th Classic Marathon to Spain
31 January 2010
Retro-Speed has received route survey news regarding the 27th Classic Marathon, 12-18 June. Anthony Preston and Chris Bruce have recently returned from their first intensive route survey.
The first leg of 360km runs from Beaune to Valence. Day 2 sees the crews continue to Millau, the classic rallying heartland of the Ardeche and Cevennes where a series of tough regularities will follow the maze of lanes - distance 430km. After a night's rest the rally continues to Carcassonne, some 400km. Things heat up on day 4 where the event takes in little-used mountain roads as a precurser to the Pyrenees where competitors will climb to over 2,000 metres. Day 5 and the rally enters the heart of Spain where the dramatic surroundings include deep ravines and long drops. The day ends in Biarritz. The final challenge of over 230km will take place exploring the deserted roads close to the French-Spanish border. Tight regularities and a sting in the tail will shape the final leader board before the gala prize-giving back in Biarritz.
Cost including accommodation, meals, etc. £3,300. For more information click on CRA's banner.
British Historic Rally Championship announces extra awards
31 January 2010
The organisers have at last found a way to discriminate those who choose to do the Championship but lack big budgets. They intend stimulating clubmen interest in the Championship by offering discretionary prizes, given as paid entry fees for one of the closing rounds of the 2010 season. The three winners of the BHRC Spirit of Clubmen Award will include those competing in categories 1, 2 and 3 who can expect to take part in either the Tour of Flanders or the Trackrod Historic Cup.
"This is a great way to recognise and reward the effort of the lower-budget clubmen competing in the BHRC," said series co-ordinator Simon Marks. "We are very grateful to Holton Homes for supporting the awards and we really hope this will make a significant difference to the season of three crews."

2010 Liege-Brescia-Liege
6 January 2010
Malcolm McKay, established 'classic' journalist and photographer, came up with the idea to celebrate the 1958 Liege-Brescia-Liege rally for 'micro cars' in 2008 which proved very successful. This year's event, running between 16 and 25 July, follows a similar format with competitors driving through Slovenia before tackling the Gavia and Stelvio passes, twice, once in the dark! Each day crews will be expected to take photographs as proof they have adhered to the correct route thus doing away with marshals.
The original novelty factor restricting cars to a maximum of 500cc has, sadly, been relaxed, allowing cars of up 1,200cc to take part. Therefore, we can expect to see a host of Mini Coopers and their like leaving the 'micro cars' way behind. Is this the organiser's intention? For those interested, the Entry Fee is £3,200.
Retro-Speed has also received details of another event for small cars organised by Malcolm, this time nearer home. Run between 5 and 11 September the Micro Marathon 2010 will take competitors 1,000 miles the length and breadth of Wales, stopping off at four race circuits, castles, museums and places of historical interest on the way. The rally is open to pre-war cars up to 1,000cc and post-war cars of a type built prior to 1976 up to 700cc. This will guarantee a mix of Morgans and Austin 7s among the later 'bubble cars'.
Only thirty places are available and the special Entry Fee of £2,250, including accommodation (two people sharing) and all meals, plus maps and mechanical back-up, will increase to £2,400 after 31 January.
For more information contact Malcolm McKay on +44 (0)7711 901811 or LBLrally@aol.com and mention Retro-Speed for preferential treatment
Ferrari dominates 2010 Mille Miglia
4 January 2010
The organisers of the Mille Miglia once again introduce innovation to their show business event by allowing 120 selected Ferraris to lead the main event. Aside from the overall classification there will be separate awards for V8 and V12 cars, Ferrari supercars such as the Enzo, F50, F40 and GTO and for older cars which will be divided into road, competition and sports cars. The classificaiton will be decided by regularity trials over specific sections, which will include the Fiorano Circuit and the Maranello stage.
Due to a change of date for the Monaco GP the Mille Miglia has been brought forward to the first weekend in May. Scrutineering will be in Brescia on Wednesday, 5 May/Thursday, 6 May and the first Ferrari will leave the start at 18:30hrs, others following at thirty second intervals. The real Mille Miglia begins immediately after the last Ferrari departs. The circular route visits Siena, Florence and Maranello before returning to Brescia on Saturday, 8 May.
For those selected the the Entry Fee, which includes hotel and meals, will be 6,040 euros including taxes.
It is a sad fact of life that the origins of the Mille Miglia, as a tough 1,000-mile race around Italy, has been lost in the mist of time. Retro-Speed has followed this regularity rally over the years and acknowledges the ever-lasting trail of pampered classics passing through small Italian villages in spring time is a joy to behold.

2010 Goodwood celebrates Italian motor racing dominance
2 January 2010
The office of the Earl of March has just contacted Retro-Speed with details concerning the 2010 Festival of Speed extravaganza. Provisional date 2–4 July.
The theme will be Viva Veloce! – The Passion for Speed, celebrating Italy’s all-consuming fascination with motor racing and its global influence on the sport. From Alfa Romeo to MV Augusta, Ascari to Agostini and Monza to the Mille Miglia, the Italians have raced with breathtaking fervour, inspiring desire and devotion that transcends national identity.
Italian DNA runs through many of the sport’s most memorable and passionate performances. Moss and Behra battling against the odds in Maseratis. Villeneuve and Schumacher’s towering achievements in Ferraris. Toivonen and Kankkunen blasting through the forests in Lancias and Surtees and Hailwood sweeping all before them on MV Augustas.
The 2010 Festival of Speed will honour the cars, motor cycles, drivers and riders that raced with unbridled Latin zeal and the legendary feats they achieved, with particular emphasis on the centenary of Alfa Romeo, surely one of the most evocative of motor sport names.
Anniversaries …….. Running alongside the central theme Goodwood will also be celebrating sixty years of the Formula 1 World Championship, sixty years of the epic Carrera Panamericana road race and fifty years since the RAC Rally took to the forests.
The Earl of March signs off by saying, “It will be fabulous to have so many great cars and drivers here at Goodwood to celebrate our Italian-flavoured Viva Veloce! theme. I look forward with much anticipation to seeing some of the greatest drivers, riders and machines in action.”
HRCR Open Day - Gaydon, 16 January
2 January 2010
HRCR is the leading name in UK historic rallying and provides strong support for all associated activity. A good example is their Open Day at Gaydon, where the opportunity exists for enthusiasts to spend a day meeting event organisers and deciding at which level they wish to enjoy their classic activities in 2010. And whether it be, just having a fun day driving on quiet country roads in the company of like-minded enthusiasts, or donning a crash helmet and competing on full-blown stage rallies, the experts are on hand and the choice is ever-wider.
This is a very social day out with plenty of variety, there is a driving test laid out in the car park while inside stalls will be selling, among other things, books, equipment and memorabilia.
Note: For those visiting the Autosport International Show at the NEC (same weekend) Retro-Speed recommends taking time out on the Saturday and joining in with the fastest growing area of motor sport.

Quality rules at London auction
9 December 2010
While sales statistics appeared good at Bonhams end-of-season sale at Olympia in London on 7 December, hammer prices were lacklustre with many cars sold at, or around, minimum estimates.
The sale made good use of a number of Rolls Royce/Bentleys and Aston Martins, with one of the former turning out to be the star performer of the evening in the very attractive shape of a rare Abbott’s of Farnham-bodied R-Type which was briskly bid on the telephone to nearly double its top estimate of £50K, in the end making £98K.
The featured early AC Cobra took £210K and a very rare early Rolls Royce went for £400K, both bottom estimates.
A Lancia B20 in extremely dilapidated condition requiring a total ground-up restoration enticed two bidders to continue up to £14K which was top-of- estimate. Also from Italy was a nice Fiat Ballila that had been part of the UK ‘Black Diamond’ Team in its hey-day which sold for just over bottom estimate, hammer price £45K.
Finally, someone drove away in what appeared to be a sound 1970 Lancia 2000 Coupe for slightly in excess of £4K, so maybe there’s hope for us mere mortals.

Hang on a second .... I know that car. Ed-in-Chief

New electric vehicle race series announced
6 December 2010
A pioneering new series, known as the EV (Electric Vehicles) Cup will bring manufacturers together in a challenge where electric-powered cars will eventually race at the top circuits throughout Europe in 2010. But can EEVRC Limited really persuade car makers to change habits of a life-time?

First race of the season not entirely successful
Retro-Speed remains cynical that such a championship series, which will include classes for city cars and sports cars as well as race-prepared saloons and prototypes, would provide sufficient entertainment. Where will the noise come from? A superimposed sound track via headphones is the only possibility. And race distances will obviously be severely restricted unless battery performance can be drastically improved.
Should the project get off the ground then a more ambitious 2011 programme is planned, this time with government support. The fact the organisers are putting the emphasis on safety before excitement means their biggest problem will be keeping spectators awake.
Spokesman Sylvain Filippi states, “We want to show that green motor sport is a reality.”
Retro-Speed wishes them the best of luck and takes this opportunity to remind them no racing driver we know would be seen dead behind the wheel of a Toyota Prius, even if it has numbers on the side.

Gravel and Asphalt mini-series for 2010 BHRC
21 November 2010
Latest news from Paul Lawrence
The 2010 Dunlop/wonago.com MSA British Historic Rally Championship will feature two dedicated mini-series for gravel and asphalt rallies, with five gravel rallies in the Water End Properties Gravel Cup and four asphalt events qualifying for the Water End Properties Asphalt Cup.
The best performance on each surface has been recognised for the last two years, and the 2009 winners were Dessie Nutt/Geraldine McBride (gravel) and Paul Mankin/Desmond Bell (asphalt).
However, in 2010 the concept will be taken further by additional awards and the inclusion of a fourth asphalt event. Although not a part of the overall BHRC for 2010, the Harry Flatters Historic Rally on Epynt will be included in the Water End Properties Asphalt Cup to give competitors four sealed-surface rallies.
"Some competitors want more gravel rallies and some competitors want more asphalt events," said championship manager Simon Marks. "Whilst the overall BHRC will continue to be decided over both types of surface, this development will particularly suit those competitors who prefer either gravel or asphalt. We already had five strong gravel rallies and have included the Harry Flatters for those who would like to focus on asphalt rallies."
The awards for each mini-series will include first, second and third overall as well as class awards. In the gravel series, competitors will score their best four results from five rallies. Meanwhile in the asphalt series, where the three 'over-the-water' events in the Isle of Man, Ulster and Flanders accrue additional points, competitors will be able to miss one of these three rallies and still challenge for awards.
"These awards recognise that certain historic cars are much more suited to one surface than the other, not to mention some of the drivers," said Steven Smith of Water End Properties. "We specifically wanted to give those crews something worthwhile to get out and compete for."
To be eligible for either series, competitors must be members of the Historic Rally Car Register.
The provisional calendars are:

Water End Properties Gravel Cup
27 March, Bulldog Rally (Wales)
24 April, Pirelli Historic Rally (Kielder)
6 June, Severn Valley Stages (Wales)
20 June, Mid Wales Stages (Wales)
25 Septembe, Trackrod Historic Cup (Yorkshire)
Water End Properties Asphalt Cup
9/10 July, Isle of Man Historic Rally
1 August, Harry Flatters Historic Rally (Epynt)*
20/21 August, Ulster Historic Rally
11/12 September, Tour of Flanders (Belgium)
* Not a round of the 2010 BHRC
Ross takes the money, Jenson takes the drive
20 November 2010
Ross Brawn sells out to Mercedes Benz. Shame. Does the man have no moral values? Like everybody else in F1 Ross is only interested in the money. Maybe he's about to retire and this is his pension fund. Either way Retro-Speed wishes that Brawn GP was still there in 2010 to take on the giants.
Something else we find mildly amusing is that Jenson Button is being compared with Lewis Hamilton as they are both driving for McLaren next year. Let's be clear about this Jenson will never be in the same league as Lewis Hamilton. That's why he is only earning a fraction of the money. Come on Jenson, prove us wrong.
New rally for 2010 British Historic Rally Championship
2 November 2010
The MSA has recently awarded a new five-year contract to the Historic Rally Car Register to manage the MSA British Historic Rally Championship, which comes as the HRCR completes a 10-year stint at the helm of the BHRC. The new agreement will take the championship through until at least 2014 under the same management. The key change for the 2010 Championship is the closed-road Ulster Rally which replaces the Harry Flatters Rally on Epynt.
Colin Hilton, MSA Chief Executive said: “The MSA has conducted a full review of the promotional contracts for all of the major rally championships. We are pleased that the HRCR is keen to continue its excellent work of recent years and this long-term contract will provide stability for all parties.”
Championship manager Simon Marks said: "We are delighted to have secured the contract from the MSA to continue taking the British Historic Rally Championship forward over the coming years. 2009 has been a particularly enjoyable season and we are looking forward to a couple of exciting developments and more competitors joining us to make 2010 our best season yet."
There will also be a new title for the BHRC, as wonago.com takes over from the Gambia as joint title sponsor with Dunlop. Wonago.com is the new holiday company of regular BHRC competitor Martin Freestone, who continues his support for the championship. The new title will be the Dunlop/wonago.com MSA British Historic Rally Championship. Wonago.com is a travel and holiday web site, with six search engines to book holidays, cruises, flights, insurance, car hire and motor home hire, all at great discounted prices. Meanwhile, Dunlop will continue to provide major backing to the championship during the second year of a multi-year partnership with the BHRC. As well as being the championship's tyre supplier, Dunlop's support has allowed extensive TV coverage of the 2009 season.
The schedule for 2010 closely follows the 2009 calendar, other than the inclusion of the Ulster Rally in August. The move away from Epynt is the result of an extensive competitor survey, which clearly demonstrated demand for another high-profile closed-roads rally rather than an event on Epynt. The Antrim-based Ulster Rally will offer a fresh new challenge and current BHRC champion Dessie Nutt says that crews contesting the event will not be disappointed. "It really is a superb event," said Nutt. "Everybody who goes will be very, very impressed. The stages are fantastic; some of them are old Circuit of Ireland stages. There is a senior team that organises the event and every one of them has extensive competition experience."
The full provisional calendar is:
27 March; Bulldog Rally (gravel)
24 April; Pirelli Historic Rally (gravel)
6 June; Severn Valley Stages (gravel)
20 June; Mid Wales Stages (gravel)
9/10 July; Isle of Man Historic Rally (asphalt)
20/21 August; Ulster Historic Rally (asphalt)
11/12 September; Tour of Flanders (asphalt)
25 September; Trackrod Historic Cup (gravel)
British Grand Prix 2010.... YES OR NO?
2 November 2010
It's a mess. On one hand we are jumping up and down with anticipation after hearing strong rumours that Jenson Button will be teaming up with Lewis Hamilton to drive for McLaren next season. Then, blow me down, along comes Bernie. What is this man up to? First he promises Donington the Grand Prix guaranteed for the next seventeen years, at the same time upsetting the British Racing Drivers Club at Silverstone, then when Simon Gillett fails to come up with the money he calmly announces, "Frankly, whether this country has a Grand Prix or not is irrelevant - there are plenty of other countries waiting to take its place."
Champion Meeke aims for glory in Scotland
12 October 2010
News from the International Rally Drivers Club
The newly-crowned winner of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC), Kris Meeke, is looking forward to putting the icing on the cake when competing on home soil this November in the inaugural RACMSA Rally of Scotland. With the IRC Drivers' Championship title now in the bag and Scotland being the only event remaining on the calendar, Meeke has just one goal remaining - to end the year with victory on his home event.
When asked about the challenges of the Rally of Scotland, Kris Meeke commented: "There are some classic and rugged stages to overcome. The weather could also be a factor as it may well be challenging in this part of the world come November. For spectators the sound of these cars in the forests will be fantastic and there are lots of great vantage points."
Meeke is particularly looking forward to stages Drummond Hill, near Kenmore and Errochty near Pitlochry which he says require a great deal of commitment. When asked about the challenges offered by the Scottish stages, Meeke said: "They are generally fast and flowing in nature, but with some tricky narrow sections meaning that you have to retain maximum concentration at all times. The deep ditches at the side of the road will be something to watch out for and tightening corners over blind crescents, therefore creating the possibility of picking up punctures."
He concluded by commenting on how the UK spectators differ from those elsewhere around the world: "The Scottish fans are always enthusiastic as evidenced by the fantastic turn-out at last year's 'Colin McRae Forest Stages' and are also amongst the most knowledgeable in the world."
New stage layout for Chatsworth
12 October 2010
The 2010 and fourth edition of The Rally Show Chatsworth will include a new stage layout, allowing cars to start at thirty second intervals. Also the service and exhibition areas will be better located for access.
Ticket prices are being reviewed to provide better value for money and are likely to be generally cheaper than 2009. A special feature for next year will be Audi, thirty years of the Quattro, including the car driven by Michelle Mouton in 1984.
Donington Park falls into big black hole
10 October 2010
Following the success of Brooklands, the 3.125-mile Donington Park opened in 1933, under the management of Fred Craner and the Derby and District Motor Club.
The fore runner of what was to become the British Grand Prix was held at the circuit exactly seventy-two years’ ago when the Germans provided a tour de force with drivers Caracciola, von Brauchitsch and Seaman deafening the record crowd with their works Mercedes Benz. However, at the finish it was Rosemeyer driving a 600bhp Auto Union that took the flag at an average of 82.86 miles per hour. The following year Nuvalari scored a second win for Auto Union before the circuit closed down and hostilities broke out in 1939.
After the war the Grand Prix moved to is new home, Silverstone. So it seems a shame that after all these years and so much speculation that, excepting a miracle, the British Grand Prix will not be returning to Donington.
Another 100 per cent record for XS Racing
6 October 2010
Paul Lawrence with news on XS Racing (Chesterfield)
A class C4 victory for Peter Smith/Russ Langthorne was the highlight result for XS Racing on the eighth and final round of the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship, the Trackrod Historic Cup (26 September).
The fast and tough Yorkshire stages were the setting for the final BHRC event and once again the XS Racing squad chalked up a 100 per cent finishing record. The Trackrod was the fifth rally of the year when all the cars from XS finished the rally and the statistics for the season make interesting reading.
Across eight rallies, XS Racing has fielded 38 entries in the 2009 BHRC, and chalked up a total of 35 finishes. The three non-finishes were all down to cars going off the road, so for 2009 XS can rightly record no retirements due to mechanical problems. Running up to seven cars on some of the toughest and most competitive events on the British rallying calendar makes this an amazing achievement.
The Trackrod was a notable day for Smith/Langthorne as Smith celebrated a landmark birthday on his home event. As the day progressed they set some excellent stage times and were fastest of all the category two cars through the final stage, a 14-mile high-speed charge through Langdale.
Fourth in class in C3, just five seconds off another top three finish, came Andrew Siddall/Captain Thompson in their Ford Escort Mk1. "We've been a bit slower than normal, but we enjoyed the rally," said Siddall.

With Drew Wylie already confirmed as class C3 champion in his XS-entered Ford Escort Mk1, the third car in the XS squad was the Ford Escort Mk1 of Peter Egerton, with Wylie's regular co-driver Howard Pridmore alongside. They had a clear run as Egerton reacclimatised to the Escort and ended the day sixth in class.
"Peter Smith's pace on the long Langdale stage was very impressive," said team boss Jon Cropper. "I'm delighted with our reliability record for 2009; that's testimony to the hard work and dedication of everyone in the team."
The weekend before the Trackrod, XS Racing was busy at the world-famous Goodwood Revival Race Meeting when the team fielded a hugely valuable Jaguar C-Type for a customer in the Freddie March Memorial Trophy Race. The car qualified second and finished fifth after a trouble-free race.
The next major event on the XS schedule is the Roger Albert Clark Rally in November. The team expects to enter a three-car team, including cars for Andrew Siddall and Peter Smith.
XS Racing specialises in all types of historic rally preparation and parts supply across a wide range of cars.
Marcos celebrates fifty years
4 October 2010
The name Marcos is derived from Jem Marsh and Frank Costin, two brilliant designers who shared extremely original ideas. Marsh was born in 1930, served in the Royal Navy, sold cars and then joined Firestone's technical department. Costin, ten years older, worked for numerous aircraft companies, finally as aerodynamic flight test engineer in charge of the experimental department of De Havilland. At the same time he had input into various Grand Prix cars including Lotus and Vanwall.
Their most successful car together was the Marcos GT, powered by Ford, but losses mounted when cars failed US regulations. From 1972 onwards the Company has always struggled and it passed through several hands until in 1981 Jem Marsh bought back the Company.
Now comes the book 'Making my Marque' by Jem Marsh.
Future of British Grand Prix
4 October 2010
Bernie Ecclestone has extended his deadline until 9 October to give Donington Park a final opportunity of raising the required £80 million pounds it needs to secure the British Grand Prix in 2010. It would appear that Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd. is struggling even though it hired Jane McGivern, former Chief Executive of Multiplex, the Company responsible for the new Wembley Stadium. Retro-Speed believes the British Grand Prix will either stay at Silverstone or disappear from the calendar.
Incidentally, Bernie has also openly announced his support for Jean Todt in the forthcoming election for the new President of the FIA.

The Masters move to Spa
12 September 2010
The next round of the Masters Historic Racing series at Spa over the weekend 26/27 September. The most exciting race of the series has been saved until now with six hours' of guaranteed close racing taking place around the evocative Belgian Spa Francorchamps circuit. Goodness knows where these amateur teams find the money to fund such an extravagant life style but the likes of Ron Maydon, president, and Christopher Tate, series director, have certainly gathered around them a mouth-watering selection of the world's finest classic racing cars.
Long may it continue.
Italian Grand Prix update
12 September 2010
How dare Flavio Briatore and Renault show their faces at Monza, the spiritual home of all that is good about motor racing. Even if the FIA find the team not guilty on 21 September it still creates a shadow of despondency amongst the fans. And to think Alonso is tipped to join Ferrari next season. Urrgh!
None of this, however, takes away from the fact tomorrow's race is an exciting prospect. Are the McLarens fast enough to hold off the Brawn challenge? Do the Force India cars have enough fuel on board to complete even the first lap? Retro-Speed still thinks the strategy of Ferrari with Raikkonen is good enough to bring the tifosi a second win on the trot. So we tip Ferrari first, Brawn second and maybe Hamilton in the McLaren a distant third.
News from Australia
12 September 2010
Motor sport takes off in Australia this weekend with the L & H 500 at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Victoria. This is the first endurance race of the V8 Supercar 2009 Championship Series, running over a distance of 500kms. There are two qualifying races to determine the grid positions of the main race and we all expect a real ding dong battle between the leading teams, Jack Daniels Racing and Toll Holden Racing Team. This is a great lead up to the famous Bathurst 1000 in October.
Where to go this weekend
11 September 2010
Simple. This weekend we all stay home and watch Formula 1 from Monza. Can Kimi or new boy Giancarlo Fisichella give Ferrari their second successive race win? After Friday practice both Mclarens are out front with Sutil somehow keeping in touch with the Force India. Retro-Speed money has to be on Raikkonen, who will be performing in front of Italy's version of the 'barmy army'.
The Historic Tour of Flanders
10 September 2010
The next round of the Dunlop/Gambia MSA British historic Rally Championship takes place in Belgium this weekend. The Porsche 911 of Dessie Nutt/Geraldine McBride starts favourite in Category 1 (pre 1968) with the potential of picking up maximum championship scores on their way to a repeat of their 2004 win. In Category 2 (1968-1974) David Sotkes/Guy Weaver are chasing hard in their MkI Escort, however, they have plenty of opposition from a host of other Escorts and Porsches. Category 3 (up to 1981) is yet another battle between the two marques. Retro-Speed will know the final results by Sunday night.
The Historic Tour of Flanders is organised by Autoclub Midden Vlaanderen.

According to Auto Italia magazine these girls learnt to tune engines, change head gaskets and all that stuff before they were allowed out in the family cars. Sebastien Loeb Loses
7 September 2010
On 6 September at the end of the Repco Rally Australia Sebastien Loeb was declared the winner but the champagne quickly turned to lemonade when the stewards declared his Citroen illegal because of its non-homologated front anti-roll bar links. The one-minute penalty demoted Loeb to second place giving victory instead to Mikko Hirvonnen in the Ford. The Citroen team did not appeal the decision and Hirvonnen enjoys a five point lead in the WRC Champtionship.

Goodwood Revival
5 September 2010
Latest news: Retro-Speed hears that this year's event is not sold-out. But remember, tickets can only be purchased on-line.
The weekend starts on Friday, 18 September when the gates open at the unearthly hour of 07.30. However, it's worth an early arrival as the air display and free practice all take place by 10.00. There will be a tribute to Sir Stirling Moss some time during the afternoon to celebrate his 80th birthday. Let's hope his back stands up to it all.
Moss is probably the most famous driver never to have become World Champion. His greatest achievement was, of course, winning the 1955 Mille Miglia with Denis Jenkinson but, personally, it was his success driving for the Rootes Group and winning a succession of Coupe des Alpes that pursuaded me to buy a Sunbeam Talbot and enter the Monte Carlo Challenge.
Happy Birthday, Sir Stirling.
HRCR raises £6,000
5 September 2010
The Historic Rally Car Register has now raised an astonishing £30,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. This year's event, as usual flagged off by Club President, Paddy Hopkirk, provided a full day's entertainment by way of simple navigation and some fun driving tests. Ralph Lodge, Clerk of the Course, and normally found navigating the slightly-mad Robin Shackleton, stated, "It was a wonderful way to gain rally experience for youngsters and newcomers." The entry included three ex-works BMC cars.
2010 Winter Trial
5 September 2010
News of the 2010 Winter Trial has just arrived at Retro-Speed Towers. Sponsored once more by Vredestein and Gant, the rally will finish near Salzburg after travelling through Germany, Czech Republic and Poland. Although the organisers claim novices are well-provided for, Bart Rietbergen designs his regularities test and night sections with the help of Mark Appleton (winner of the recent Classic Marathon) with experts in mind. He takes no prisoners and this is a tough event. However, just to finish is an achievement and the farewell dinner is something very special.
The Entry Fee, discounted depending when paid, covers seven nights' accommodation at the best available hotels, all dinners, decals and door numbers, as it should for around 5,000 euros. Retro-Speed thoroughly recommends this winter rally and wishes you the best of luck!
Is Donington going to make it for 2010?
5 September 2010
Every time I take off from East Midlands Airport (until 1 January 2010 when easyJet pull out) I look down at the building site that is Donington Park. Can they realistically hope to run the British Grand Prix in 2010? Herewith is the current statement as freely available on their web site.
The Count Down to the Formula One 2010 British Grand Prix has begun
North West Leicestershire District Council’s approval of planning permission for the re-development of Donington Park on 8 January 2009 began the countdown for the long anticipated return of grand prix racing to the Leicestershire parkland circuit.
Since hosting its first race in 1931, the Leicestershire parkland circuit of Donington Park – the first permanent park circuit in England – has been a fans’ favourite. The last pre-war Grand Prix in 1938 was as memorable as the 29th European Grand Prix hosted at the circuit 55 years later in 1993 – all of which bodes well for the return of Grand Prix racing to Donington Park in 2010.
1938 brought a surprise victory for the then 46-year-old racing legend Tazio Nuvolari – described by Dr Ferdinand Porsche as, “The greatest driver of the past, the present, and the future.” The Italian took a dramatic race win in front of a 60,000-strong British crowd, which included the Duke of Kent, in an 80-mile, 250-lap showdown.
Having quit Alfa Romeo in 1938 and criticising the team for poor workmanship due to a split fuel tank in the first race of the season, Nuvolari agreed to race for Auto Union at the Donington Park Grand Prix event on 22 October. Despite battling with the pain from a fractured rib, sustained during an accident with a deer during practice, and the need to pit for a change of plugs during the race, Nuvolari crossed the finish line in first with a 90-second advantage.
This was the last of the epic battles for which Donington Park had become renowned for quite some time as the break out of World War II saw the circuit being used as a vehicle depot by the War Office. Its rescue came in the form of Tom Wheatcroft in 1971 who bought the Donington Park land and funded the rebuild of the circuit. The businessman also moved his substantial car collection to the venue – where it is now housed in the Grand Prix museum.
Racing returned to the circuit following the rebuild and 55 years after the Nuvolari victory, on Easter Sunday in 1993, another classic race was produced. Amid dismal weather conditions, Ayrton Senna dominated the British track for the third round of that year’s Formula One championship. The Brazilian driver won the race by more than one minute from homegrown hero Damon Hill. Senna had moved fron fifth to first on the opening lap and maintained his competitive advantage until the chequered flag.
A tribute to Senna still stands outside the Donington Park Grand Prix museum (see Retro-Speed feature - Senna Toleman track test) as a reminder of what many called Senna’s greatest drive. Following a 15-year break since that race, 2010 will once again mark the return of Grand Prix racing to the Leicestershire circuit and fans are at the heart of the plans. Improved facilities and a focus on providing some of the most spectactular viewing areas and vantage points at any UK motorsport venue will ensure that Donington Park retains its position as a fans’ favourite.
Architect, Peter Wahl has promised that the new circuit, which will host the British F1 Grand Prix for 17 years from July 2010, will present overtaking and excitement together with technical challenges for drivers and teams.
Tilke, the German concern in which Peter is a partner, has designed most of the world's newest circuits. However, Donington Park is the company's first project in England. On a visit to the parkland circuit, Peter described his work on the project as very exciting because the "circuit has to include the best of the old with the new."
The design of the circuit has been handled by Wahl and his partner Herman Tilke: "We had a lot of fun - Herman is a racing driver so we added many features and are confident that the new circuit will be very good. It has been a task for us to maintain the tradition of the circuit with the necessary new designs but we have done it in such a way that it will be as interesting as when Ayrton Senna won the 1993 Grand Prix of Europe there in 1993, and that was the best race ever."
The multi-million project has a number of features including an under-track tunnel to provide ready access to the infield area, pits and paddock complex at all times.
Retro-Speed comment: Will it, won't it? Bernie is on their side because the BRDC has never been on his Christmas list. But money is hard to come by at the moment so can Harry find the dosh to finish the job in time? Watch this space.
Will Renault be the end of F1?
5 September 2010
We can't believe that a company with such a high reputation as Renault could try to pull off such a stupid trick. But then again the mind goes back to the Mercedes McLaren debacle last year.
When Nelson Piquet Jnr climbed from the wreckage of his Renault car, facing the wrong way on the floodlit streets of Singapore after clattering into two walls, he scampered across the track and vanished into the night.
At the time, it was dismissed as another abysmal mistake in an abject season by the privileged son of three times world champion Nelson Piquet. But 11 months later, the debris from that crash will be dissected in a courtroom in Paris on Monday. At stake is not only of the reputation of the Renault team but the integrity of Formula One itself.
Retro-Speed sincerely hopes there is no substance to this allegation. F1 and the surrounding organisation is very fragile and something of this magnitude, if proven, will surely be the end of Grand Prix racing as we know it.
Club LanciaSport autumn programme
5 September 2010
Autumn is the Season to get in gear. August Bank holiday is the start of the show and activity season... But it is also time to read all about LANCIA in the press.
Any Lancia owner from any club is welcome to our events and can post on our forum to find out more. We think you'll like it and want to join. Search for the Club LanciaSport flag pole at events, hide in our gazebo from the inevitable rain shower - and show us your pride and joy.
First gear: Keep your eyes on the shelves for Classic Cars and Auto Italia magazine in the coming months and grab a copy - you won't want to read forums about the Lancia articles when you can read the hard copy. That's all we can say right now... you will be the first to know when we know more...
Second gear: Starts with the Hampshire Pageant of Motoring this Bank Holiday Sunday, 30 August. If you've a Lancia, are able to make a trip to Romsey - then get in contact with us NOW and we might be able to squeeze your car onto our 10-car stand.
Third gear: Auto Italia at Gaydon on September 6th - It's the British Motor Industry museum with Land Rover off-road experience and Jaguar Land Rovers test track available.
Fourth gear: RallyDay at Castle Combe circuit on Saturday, 19 September. Club LanciaSport has organised a Lancia track session - when the places are gone, they're gone. We also have a special paddock stand right in the middle - without a pass, you might end up in the public car park so please contact us and reserve a ticket now!
Top gear: The Club LanciaSport "Drive and Learn" track session at Curborough sprint course under the watchful eye of John Whalley and James Whelan: John a well known Lancia Delta rally driver and specialist, James a VLN Nürburgring driver there to give you tips and tricks. Not a free for all, one car at a time at YOUR pace designed for you to appreciate the effort in designing and appreciating Lancia handling.
That's not quite all for the year. All of the above and Rally Legends in San Marino (where a group of CLS members will be with their cars) will give us the material we need to give you a 2009 momento of Lancia fun. We're going to produce a wee movie . You can see a clip of the sort of thing we're talking about here www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnULrKEGp1E
