72ND GOODWOOD MEMBERS' MEETING DAY 1

An unspoiled Goodwood  Report and images by Peter Baker

Day One (Saturday 29 March 2014) of the 72nd Goodwood Members' Meeting will be remembered for the glorious sunshine, atmosphere and the fantastic line-up of cars.

The Team Retro-Speed Minis of Andy Harrison and TV chef James Martin survived a very competitive qualifying, although, as James had to present his Saturday cooking programme 'live' he missed practice, and starts at the back for today's race. The Marcus Mussa McLaren was on song and he will be in amongst the front runners of his race, while Jeremy Cooke is over the moon, after a winter session on the rolling road by preparer Mike Dowd has released a full 150bhp in the lightweight Cooper Bobtail. The qualifying sessions and three races were supplemented by demonstrations for Turbo F1 Cars and Group B Rally Cars.

Without the faintly overwhelming social glamour that goes with the Revival, the 72nd Meeting is proving a great weekend of historic motorsport with many genuine well-known names such as Ross Brawn and Nick Mason joining the other GRRC Members. Of course, the marvellous weather helps, and one can't help but appreciate the non-claustrophobic crowd numbers, well down on the Festival September meeting.

Today promises another day of sunshine and a full race programme that includes all the usual favourites. This is a Goodwood almost unspoiled by commercialism, so let's hope Lord March allows it to stay that way.
