SuperSixties 300 km. Dijon-Prenois, September 11-12
Qualifying: Lyons takes pole
With 49 cars on track it was a busy SuperSixties qualifying session at Dijon-Prenois. Kennet Persson,
whose Ford GT40 traditionally adorns the poster of the Dijon Motors Cup, initially set the fastest time,
but ended up fifth. Pole was claimed by pro Michael Lyons in the AC Cobra he shared with rookie
Bruce Fullerton. Andy Newall and Rhea Sautter secured second on the grid in the Jaguar with Pete
Reynolds and Daniel Quintero third in the first of the Lotus Elans. In fourth was Oliver Douglas in the
Cobra Daytona. It was more Lotus Elans in 6th and 7th with Jan van der Kooi and the duo of
Chalendard and Perou. Roelant de Waard claimed 8th in the Shelby Mustang with yet another Elan in
9th: Jérôme Cattelin. Henk and Thijs van Gammeren were fastest of the touring cars in the Ford
Falcon, with Theodore and Guillaume Colinet not far behind in their Alfa GTA and Sinke/Vriend third
in another Falcon. De Vries/De Vries topped the times of the Mini's, but the surprise was Jasper de
Kruijff who was just 0,3 of a second slower on his SuperSixties debut. In GTS11 things were very
close with Erwin van Lieshout in the Porsche 911 just 0,17 of a second quicker than the duo of Florian
Lübbert and Christian Henke in the Triumph TR4.
Race: roll of the Safety Car dice
The safety car played an important role in the 300 km of Dijon. The first was caused by Kennet
Persson on lap 18, when a wheel bearing let go on the Ford GT40. It took a while to retrieve the car
from the Villeroy gravel trap. He had been disputing the lead with Andy Newall in the Jaguar E-type.
By this time, we had also lost Oliver Douglas in the Cobra Daytona due to a broken crankshaft pulley.
The pit window was open for the first round of compulsory stops shortly afterwards and saw
Jérôme Cattelin and Pete Reynolds/Dave Quintero in their Lotus Elans in the lead for a short while,
with Roelant de Waard in the Shelby GT350 and Jan van der Kooi in his Lotus Elan also near the
front. The next Safety Car was caused by the Rappange Porsche 904-6 dropping its oil on the
approach to the Bretelle. The car spun out on its own oil, which was a shame as Jop had moved up
from 48th to 7th. We were now 25 laps into the race and soon the second pit window was open, which
caused a run on the Sodifuel pumps. Cattelin in his Lotus Elan was in the lead now, until another SC
period ensued when the Pages Porsche crashed into the tire barriers after the driver became unwell.
The medics took care of him and the Porsche was towed away. Quintero and Reynolds now took over
at the front from De Waard, the Chalendard/Perou Elan and Newall/Sautter. Thanks to the Safety Car,
these four were gifted a lap, while their pursuers Sander van Gils, Marcel Kutak, Jérôme Cattelin and
Jan van der Kooi lost ground in their Lotus Elans. On lap 47, Newall retook the lead. Trying to keep
up, the #135 Elan unfortunately got stuck in the gravel trap. The Safety Car had to be deployed once
more and we were left with a short sprint to the finish. Newall/Sautter duly took the win, with Patrick
Chalendard/Eric Perou second on the road but relegated to third behind Roelant de Waard after
various time penalties had been applied. Van Gils, Cattelin, van der Kooi and Kutak made it five Lotus
Elans in the first 7, while Italian visitors Stefano Rosina/Alex de Angelis (Jaguar E-type) finished 8th
.
GTS11 class contenders Erwin van Lieshout (Porsche 911) and Florian Lübbert/Christian Henke
(Triumph TR4) rounded out the top-10. In touring cars, Bart Deenik/Hemmo Vriend took the win from
Henk and Thijs van Gammeren, in Ford Falcons. René and Thijmen de Vries were next in the CT07
winning Mini Cooper S, while Gregoire and Guillaume Colinet won CT08 in their Alfa GTA from
Sinke/van Abbe in the #13 Lotus Cortina. Jasper de Kruijff had a great SuperSixties debut, pedalling
the white Mini to second in class together with its owner Rob Rappange. Noud den Engelsman, just
15 years old, was another SuperSixties debutant and finished 3rd in class, sharing with Bert Mets.
Cornee van de Grint (Lotus Elite) and Frank Weidema (Mini Marcos) had their own "plastic fantastic"battle, both winning their class. Finally, we must mention Vick Schuijlenburg who made an impressive
SuperSixties debut. With a bit of help from co-pilots Ties and Thijmen she finished an impressive
22nd overall in the "tame" Challenge-spec Mustang.
