Racing Driver Derek Daly Reveals the Brutal Reality of Life at Formula 1's Top Table.
Racing driver Derek Daly has published a no-holds-barred autobiography that lifts the lid on the brutal realities of competing in the world's most prestigious racing formulas, the 217mph crash that nearly killed him, and the life-changing decision to walk away from F1 and start again. Serial Survivor is a powerful story of resilience, risk, and reinvention - out this May.
A blend of high drama, honesty, and hard-earned perspective, Daly's memoir charts his extraordinary rise from a modest upbringing in Dundrum Co. Dublin to the pinnacle of world motorsport, racing in Formula 1 with Williams in 1982, before moving to IndyCar in the United States and stepping out of the cockpit for the final time in 1992.
Widely regarded as one of Ireland's most naturally gifted racing drivers, Daly's career was marked by a meteoric rise driven by raw, unbridled talent. From Formula 1 to IndyCar and endurance racing, his journey was repeatedly derailed by mechanical failures, human misjudgements and near-fatal crashes.
In the book, Daly speaks candidly for the first time about sub-standard treatment within top teams, the psychological toll of repeated accidents to the moment he realised that he was being pushed out of Formula 1.
That realisation prompted a dramatic move to America, where he rebuilt his career in IndyCars and sports cars. In 1984, Daly survived one of the most violent crashes in motorsport history when his car struck the wall at Michigan at 217mph and disintegrated, leaving him with severe injuries and a long road to recovery.
Against the odds, he returned to racing competing again in Indycars and at Le Mans with Jaguar and later achieving consecutive victories in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1990 and 1991. When his driving career finally came to an end, Daly reinvented himself once again, becoming one of America's most respected motorsport broadcasters, interviewers, and keynote speakers.
This autobiography moves beyond a traditional racing memoir. It is a human-interest story of ambition and failure, survival and reinvention and the courage required to keep moving forward, no matter what.
'Derek's experiences — and a powerful ability to depict them — move this story beyond the scope of the most skilful fiction writer.' Maurice Hamilton
